By Travis Jarome, Director of Athletic Strategic Communications

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | The Alabama State University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and head baseball coach Jose’ Vazquez released the 2022 Hornets’ baseball schedule Thursday morning, featuring 30 home contests.

The schedule features several in-state and historical opponents such as Jacksonville State, Samford, UAB and Troy in non-conference play. The Hornets also play two SEC schools from the state in Alabama and Auburn (twice) to highlight the schedule.

Alabama State kicks off the year in New Orleans (La.) in the annual MLB Classic with three games, including a pair against Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) opponents – Southern (February 18) and Florida A&M (February 19) – before closing out the weekend against New Orleans. The game with Florida A&M will be shown on MLB TV on the Saturday of the tournament.

The Hornets open their home schedule against Samford (February 22) before facing Alabama on the road the next day, an opponent who was canceled last season due to COVID-19. The Hornets play their first weekend series at home against UT-Martin (February 25-27), before Auburn appears on the schedule for the first time on March 1 – the first of back-to-back road games with the Hornets facing Samford (March 2).

Alabama State hosts first-time opponent St. Bonaventure for a three-game set at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex (March 4-5) before facing UAB (March 9). The Hornets step out of conference to face a SWAC opponent in non-conference action when they face Grambling State (March 11-13) before opening conference play at home against Florida A&M (March 18-20). A four-game road trip begins on March 22 when the Hornets take on Troy and then head south to Daytona Beach (Fla.) to face Bethune-Cookman for the first time in conference play (March 25-27).

A five-game home stand begins March 29 against Troy, with games against defending conference champion Jackson State (April 1-3) and in-state foe Jacksonville State (April 5). Following a mid-week road trip to South Alabama (March 6), the Hornets face Alabama A&M (April 8-10) and South Alabama (April 12) at home.

The Hornets close out the month of May with a seven-game road trip with games at Mississippi Valley State (April 14-16), Auburn (April 20), and Jackson State (April 22-24). The remainder of the schedule features home games against Bethune-Cookman (April 29-May 1), Georgia State (May 3), and Mississippi Valley State (May 13-15). They will also play road games to close out the regular season against Florida A&M (May 6-8), Jacksonville State (May 17), and Alabama A&M (May 19-21).
