By J.T. Wilcox, Sports Information Director

MONTGOMERY, Fla. – Five different Florida Memorial University batters had two hits each senior pitcher Juan Raul Hernandez threw a complete game three-hitter as the Lions cruised to a 14-1 victory over rival Edward Waters University in seven innings Thursday afternoon in the winner’s bracket game of the 2022 Tyson Foods Black College World Series at Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery, Alabama.

The No. 1 seed in the NAIA division Florida Memorial, remains unbeaten and stays in the winner’s bracket – where it will wait to face the winner of the loser’s bracket elimination game (either Edward Waters or the winner of the first loser’s bracket elimination game between Rust College and Talladega College) on Friday afternoon.

How It Happened

  • After giving up a single run to the Tigers in the top of the first, Hernandez tightened the screws on Edward Waters and held it scoreless through the remainder of the game.
  • The Lions got on the board in the bottom of the third thanks to a few defensive breakdowns by EWU – starting the inning with Nathan Harris drawing a walk then getting a free base on a wild pitch and an unearned run on a balk.
  • After tying the game, FMU took the lead by stringing together a couple of hits – including a Jalen Young RBI triple – and ended up with 4-1 lead after an Axel Gomez RBI sac-fly.
  • Gomez extended the Lions’ lead to 6-1 in the fifth with a 2-run home run to left field – his second homer of the tournament.
  • Florida Memorial’s led ballooned to 10-1 by the end of the fifth inning after it got two more unearned runs on a hit-by-pitch and a wild pitch.
  • After FMU tacked on another four runs in the bottom of the sixth, Hernandez forced the Tigers to ground into a double play and recorded the final out of the seventh inning on a strikeout – ending the game as the 10-run had been activated.

Inside The Box Score

  • Gomez went 2-for-3 with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored to go along with his home run.
  • Rohandry Javier, Young, Ulises Rodriguez, and Fernando Vila were the other FMU players to finish with 2 hits.
  • Rodriguez went 2-for-4 and tied Gomez for the team-high 3 RBI.
  • Both of Young’s hits were extra-bast hits – notching a double and triple.
  • Hernandez pitched 7.0 innings, striking out 4 and earning the win.
  • Edward Waters had 3 total hits and was charged with 2 errors.
  • Young, Luis Ruiz, and Yunior Sanchez each recorded a stolen base Thursday.
