LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State University men’s basketball program welcomed a new member to its coaching staff this week as Gary Smith was announced as the newest Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach for Head Coach Landon Bussie.

Smith had spent the past five years at NAIA powerhouse Xavier University of Louisiana first as a Student Assistant before moving up the ranks to Graduate Assistant and finally Assistant Coach in 2020.

A New Orleans native and 2017 alumni of XULA, he brings a winning culture north from the Crescent City where he amassed a 79-49 record as a coach to go along with a sparkling 92-40 showing as a player for the Gold Rush.

While on the sidelines for the Green and Gold, Smith helped propel the team to two top-ten scoring defenses in the NAIA, oversaw six NAIA All-Americans and five individual conference award winners (3 Freshmen of the Year, 1 Player of the Year, 1 Defensive Player of the Year).

The student-athletes under his tutelage excelled not only on the hardwood but in the classroom as well. During his tenure, Xavier (La.) had four individuals be selected as Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars and saw 39 players qualify for the Sister Grace Mary Flickinger Honor Roll, an honor he received himself as a student in 2017.
