Howard University women’s tennis team secured its first of the season, topping Mount St. Mary’s (MSM), 4-1, at Watkins Regional Park in Upper Marlboro, Md.

HU (1-4) swept the competition in doubles play, winning all three contests while taking an early 1-0 match lead.

Reigning Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week junior Nadia Pegram (Naples, Fla.) and newcomer Imani Jean (Brooklyn, N.Y.), reigning MEAC Rookie of the Week, served as the club’s No. 1 doubles team, knocking off MSM’s Sofia Kostrirko and Margherita Trolese, 6-2.

Third-year Bison Jordan Grayson (Gaithersburg, Md.) and sophomore Selah Stibbins (Minneapolis) took down Mount St. Mary’s Valentine Mudry and Adriana Barney, 6-3.

All-MEAC selection junior Sifa Butcher (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) and freshman Dana Hall (Miami) wrapped up doubles play with a 6-4 victory over MSM’s Bella Pescatore and Ana Alvarez-Storni.

In singles competition, rookie Ava Chambers (Wellington, Fla.) played in the No. 2 spot with a straight set win (6-0, 6-3) over The Mount’s Adriana Barney.

Pegram and Hall also picked up singles victories in straight sets.

Jean and Stibbins were leading their respective matches but did not finish due to the Bison reaching four match wins.

Scheduled for Feb. 16, the HU tennis program is set to compete against the University of the District of Columbia at WTEF-East Capitol Campus in D.C.
