HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Jackson State University women’s tennis team won its second straight Southwestern Athletic Conference regular season title with a 4-0 win at Alabama A&M Saturday, while the JSU men won its fourth straight SWAC match with a hard-fought 4-3 win over the Bulldogs.
In women’s doubles, Jackson State’s #1 duo of Sherine Salem and Tyra-Nicole White won over Camila Ruiz-Diaz and Ximena Duarte-Ramirez, 6-1, and JSU’s #3 duo of Robin Alston and Zeina Shaban downed Alabama A&M’s Neha Ghare and Kennedy Ward, 6-2 to secure the doubles’ point.
In singles, the Lady Tigers were dominant as well. JSU’s #6 Shaban beat Ward, 6-1, 6-1. #2 Paula Arcarons defeated AAMU’s Deja Brown 6-0, 6-1, and #5 Daniela Ramos won over India Woods 6-1, 6-2.
After dropping the first doubles match in men’s play, Jackson State won the final two matches to earn the point. JSU’s #1 team of Juan Soria and Raul Centero beat Rodrigo Rios and Cheng Chang 6-4, while the #3 team of Richy Gamo and Francisco Vargas beat Freddie Lawrence and German Ruiz Crespo, 6-4.
The singles matches were split 3-3, with the Tigers winning the first, third, and deciding match. Jackson State’s #1 Vargas beat Nence Ntcha, 6-2, 6-4. JSU’s #2 Centeno downed Arana Rios, 6-3, 6-2. With the match win on the line, #5 Gamo rallied to a three-set win over Lawrence 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.
The Lady Tigers (13-5 overall, 9-0 SWAC) and Tigers (7-6, 4-1) both return to action Friday hosting Loyola – New Orleans at Noon at the JSU Tennis Center.
