Janmikell Bastardo homers twice in Florida A&M’s 9-1 victory over Texas Southern

ATLANTA, Ga. —Senior Janmikell Bastardo put together a brilliant showing at the plate Wednesday, hitting two home runs to help power the Florida A&M Rattlers past the Texas Southern Tigers 9-1.

Senior Hunter Viets (6-1) started on the mound and picked up the win for Florida A&M (25-27). The right-hander went seven shutout innings while giving up five hits, allowing no walks and striking out five. Senior Zach Morea also made an impact on the mound for the Rattlers, throwing one shutout inning while allowing no hits, with no walks and one strikeout.

Bastardo went 2-for-3 at the plate, supplementing his two home runs with four RBIs. Junior Adam Haidermota added to Bastardo’s awesome power-hitting performance by going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI along with one walk. Senior Jared Weber also chipped in for the Rattlers, going 3-for-5 with a walk and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Rattlers put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the fifth inning. Bastardo put Florida A&M on the board with a two-out solo home run off junior Abraham Deleon.

The Tigers failed to push any runs across before the Rattlers built on their lead in the seventh inning. Florida A&M managed to push across two runs in the inning, which brought the score to 3-0 in favor of the Rattlers.

Florida A&M kept Texas Southern without a run before building their lead to 7-0 the following inning. The Rattlers bats heated up in the inning, scoring four runs, including a three-run home run off the bat of Bastardo.

Florida A&M kept the Tigers without a run before their offense got things moving the next inning. The Rattlers picked up two runs off of Texas Southern pitching, punctuated by a run-scoring double off the bat of senior Ty Hanchey, bringing the score to 9-0 in favor of Florida A&M. Texas Southern put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Rattlers still coasted to the 9-1 win.
