MEAC Announces Men’s Basketball Weekly Honors

NORFOLK, Va., Jan. 24, 2023Senior guard Isaiah Burke of Morgan State has been named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, the league announced today. Delaware State’s Jevin Muniz was named Rookie of the Week, and graduate guard Donchevell Nugent of Maryland Eastern Shore was announced as the Defensive Player of the Week.

Burke (6-1, Sr., G, Bowie, Md.) averaged 24.3 points in three games for the Bears this past week and shot a combined 47% from the floor as Morgan State won two of three games. He opened with 31 points on 11-for-18 shooting in a non-conference win over Hartford – his third straight 30-point effort – before turning in back-to-back 21-point performances against Howard and Norfolk State. He knocked down five 3-pointers in the Norfolk State contest, and for the week, he went 10-for-23 (43%) from behind the arc.

Muniz (6-6, Fr., G, Bethlehem, Pa.) averaged 13.5 points and 3.5 assists a game for the Hornets, shooting a combined 45% from the floor. He scored in double figures in both games, led by a 16-point, 5-assist effort in a win over South Carolina State. He accounted for 11 points, hitting three 3-pointers, against North Carolina Central.

Nugent (6-0, Gr., G, Newburgh, N.Y.) grabbed six steals in the Hawks’ one-point win over North Carolina Central on Monday.

Other Top Performers
Sam Sessoms (Coppin State) dropped 23 points to go along with seven rebounds against Howard, after turning in a 19-point, 5-assist effort against Norfolk State.

Khyrie Staten (Delaware State) had 19 points against South Carolina State and 13 points against North Carolina Central.

Elijah Hawkins (Howard) dished out 13 assists against Morgan State, and added 13 points against Coppin State.

Shy Odom (Howard) scored nine points each against Coppin State and Morgan State.

Jelani Williams (Howard) grabbed 10 rebounds against Coppin State and was one point shy of a double-double.

Kevon Voyles (Maryland Eastern Shore) poured in a career-high 27 points on 11-for-15 shooting against South Carolina State.

Kris Bankston (Norfolk State) recorded a double-double (19 points, 13 rebounds) against Coppin State before dropping a career-high 24 points against Morgan State.

George Beale (Norfolk State) went 7-for-8 from the floor in a 17-point effort against Coppin State.
