MEAC Announces Weekly Women’s Basketball Honors

NORFOLK, Va., Jan. 24, 2023Morgan State senior guard Ja’Niah Henson and Maryland Eastern Shore sophomore forward/center Ariana Seawell were selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women’s Basketball Co-Players of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, the conference office announced today. Delaware State’s Savannah Brooks was named Rookie of the Week, while Morgan State graduate forward Charlene Shepherd earned Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Henson (5-3, Sr., G, Baltimore, Md.) averaged 23.0 points and shot 51% (18-for-35) from the floor in helping the Bears remain undefeated in MEAC play this past week. She opened with 26 points and three steals against Howard, going 10-for-16 from the floor, before turning in a 20-point, 3-steal effort in a win over Norfolk State to hand the Spartans their first MEAC loss.

Seawell (6-2, So., F/C, Bronx, N.Y.) averaged a double-double for the Hawks, with 18.5 points and 11.0 rebounds per game. She was a combined 15-for-21 (70%) from the floor. She opened with 21 points and 11 boards against South Carolina State, hitting eight of her 11 field goal attempts, before going 7-for-10 from the floor in a 16-point, 11-rebound effort at North Carolina Central.

Brooks (5-9, Fr., G/F, Taneytown, Md.) averaged 13.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game this past week, shooting a combined 50% (11-for-22) from the floor. She dropped 18 points, while grabbing five boards and two steals, against South Carolina State – and against North Carolina Central, she had nine points, five rebounds and two steals.

Shepherd (6-2, Gr., F, Killeen, Texas) averaged 12.0 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game for the Bears this past week. She opened with seven rebounds (five on defense) and three steals against Howard, before turning in a 17-rebound, 2-steal effort against Norfolk State. Of her 24 total rebounds for the week, 18 came on the defensive end.

Other Top Performers
Jewel Watkins (Coppin State) recorded a double-double (20 points, 11 rebounds) against Howard and had 15 points and nine rebounds against Norfolk State.

Alexis Moragne (Delaware State) grabbed six rebounds against South Carolina State.

Destiny Howell (Howard) had 20 points, seven rebounds and four assists against Coppin State after turning in a 19-point effort against Morgan State.

Krislyn Marsh (Howard) grabbed seven rebounds against Coppin State.

Nile Miller (Howard) grabbed eight rebounds against Morgan State, then recorded six points and five boards against Coppin State.

Deja Francis (Norfolk State) had 17 points and five assists against Morgan State.

Kimeira Burks (North Carolina Central) dropped 20 points and hit five 3-pointers against Maryland Eastern Shore.

Jerni Kiaku (North Carolina Central) had 15 points and three assists against Maryland Eastern Shore.

Lovely Sonnier (South Carolina State) recorded a 17-point, 19-rebound double-double against Maryland Eastern Shore.
