DURHAM, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University women’s tennis team earned a 4-3 victory over UNC-Greensboro at the Dr. James W. Younge Tennis Courts on Thursday afternoon. This is the first home opening win since Feb. 1, 2020, and the first time beating the Spartans in program history.

The action began with the Spartans taking the doubles point. Sophomore Lafi Joao and junior Jade Houston fell to Alexandra Dodashev Enbert and McCollough Perry (6-2).

Freshmen Candice Bernier and Alejandra Hidalgo Vega held a 2-1 lead over Olivia Gallagher and Hanna Giddings. However, the Spartans duo was able to win the next five games to take the doubles point.

In singles play, Bernier defeated Dodashev Enbert (6-2, 6-3) to earn the first singles victory of her career. Hidalgo Vega beat Olivia Gallagher to claim a singles win in the second straight match (6-2, 6-4, 7-6, 0).

Also winning for the second consecutive match was Hill who kept the maroon and gray momentum going as she outlasted Arina Babkova. Hill dropped the first set in a tiebreaker (3) and then dominated the next two frames 6-2, 6-1.

Junior Maria Picazo Martin fought hard but was clipped by Luna Urso (6-4, 6-1), while sophomore Isabelle Exsted’s match with Raegan Mitchell went unfinished. The unfinished match setup Joao to clinch the Eagles’ victory by defeating Ella Olexa 6-1, 6-3.

Up next, NCCU (1-2) will travel to Wilmington to take on the Seahawks of UNCW on Saturday, Jan. 28. The action from UNCW’s Tennis Complex will begin at 1:00 p.m.
