Prairie View A&M Clinches Berth In SWAC Championship Game with Victory Over Alabama State

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas —Behind a dominant defensive showing that kept the Alabama State offense to 16 rushing yards, Prairie View A&M took down the Hornets 21-14 at home Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers improved to 6-5 on the year and 6-2 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play, while the Hornets fell to 6-4 and 5-3.

Caleb Johnson led all Panthers rushers with 77 yards in the contest, picking up 5.5 yards per carry. Jamarious Brooks also added 43 yards on the ground, averaging 6.1 yards per carry.

Chris Herron hauled in one catch for 54 yards and one score.

Cj Pressley showed out for the Prairie View A&M defense, totaling eight tackles, 2.5 TFL, 1.5 sacks, and one forced fumble. Derrick Ray added four tackles, 1.0 TFL, and one sack, and Nevon Cooper had in the win.

The Prairie View A&M offense did a good job extending drives, converting on 44.4 percent of third-down attempts.

Defensively, Prairie View A&M did an excellent job neutralizing the Alabama State rushing attack, holding the Hornets to 16 yards on the ground. In part because of that stellar defense, Prairie View A&M runners out-gained their Alabama State counterparts 170-16. The Panther’s defense disrupted Alabama State’s backfield all game, racking up four sacks and nine total tackles for loss.

How It Happened

Prairie View A&M scored first with 2:51 remaining in the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead. The Panthers then extended their lead to 14-0 with another score.

Prairie View A&M continued to expand its advantage after Alabama State made it a 14-7 game, scoring again with 8:53 left in the fourth quarter to go ahead 21-7. Prairie View A&M went scoreless the rest of the game while Alabama State added seven points to finish off the scoring.
