Virginia State’s Hammond, Jones Selected to Play Summer Baseball with Tri-City Chili Peppers

ETTRICK, VA – After amazing inaugural seasons with the Virginia State Baseball team, Ricky Jones and Tahraun Hammond have been selected to play for the Tri-City Chili Peppers in the summer of 2022.

The super freshman, Tahraun Hammond led the team in a host of categories such as batting average (.369), at-bats (130), runs (37), hits (48), walks (28), doubles (14), on-base percentage (.494) and on-base slugging percentage (1.056). Hammond also has a lively arm on the mound as the reliever has accounted for 22 strikeouts while giving up just 16 hits. The young player started every game this season while boasting hitting streaks a four-games on two separate occasions. Hammond’s best game hitting came against Clark Atlanta where we went 4-5 with three runs and RBI. His best game on the mound was against MACU when the middle reliever stepped in for 3.2 innings and earned four strikeouts while only giving away one hit and no runs.

Opposing teams played the fence when Ricky Jones stepped up to bat as he maintained a .364 batting average, which ranks him second on the team. Jones leads the squad in home runs (5), total bases (76), slugging percentage (.589), RBI (34), and triples (2). He has collected 12 multi-hit games this season. After a five-game hitting slump for the slugger, he ended the season with a six-game hitting streak. Jones enjoyed a team-high eight-game hitting streak from February 26 – March 20. Jones posted three, three-hit ball games along with a pair of four-hit ball games as well. He was also a vacuum in the outfield as well with 84 put outs on the season with no errors. His best game came against Clark Atlanta early in the season when he went 4-7 with two homers, three runs scored and three RBI.

The Tri-City Chili Peppers are a premier collegiate summer baseball team playing in the Coastal Plain League. The team plays its home games at Shepherd Stadium in Colonial Heights, Virginia. The Chili Peppers joined the league in 2020 but refrained from competing due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
