ERIE, Pa. The Winston-Salem State University defeated Lake Erie 73-70 Saturday night in the championship game of the Gary Miller Classic.
The Rams moved to 6-1 on the season.
Jaylon Gibson was named to the Gary Miller Classic All-Tournament team and Samage Teel was the tournament MVP.
Samage Teel led all scorers with a game-high 20 points, followed by Jonathan Hicklin with 15 points. Jaylen Alston led the team in rebounds with eight.
Jonathan Hicklin hit a three and a jumper to give the Rams an early 5-0 lead over the Storm. The Storm took a 10-9 lead with 13:53 left to play in the half. At the under-12 media, the Rams trailed 15-11. The Rams took a 22-21 lead on another jumper from Jonathan Hicklin with 7:43 to go in the half. We were tied 26-all with 4:22 left to play. The Storm went into the half up one, 34-33.
Isaac Parson hit a three to tie the game at 42-all with 13:23 to play in the game. The Storm increased their lead to 47-44 with 10:40 remaining in the game. The Rams took a 51-50 lead on a Xavier Fenell jumper with 9:02 left to play. Jeremy Dixon hit a huge three to give the Rams a 58-51 lead with 7:25 left on the clock. PJ Jones hit a three to cut within the Rams’ lead (63-58). Pj Jones hit another three with five seconds left in the game to trail 72-68. Jonathan Hicklin hit the game-winning free throw to ice the game and seal the Rams’ 73-70 victory.
The Rams are back in action on Wednesday, November 30th hosting Johnson and Wales at 7:00 p.m. inside the C.E. Gaines Center.
